Poetry 365 – Day 271 (Mum What’s A Migrant?)

Mum what’s a migrant?
It said on the news they’re coming
A million, is that a lot?
Billy’s Dad said they steal and lie
Is that really true?
He said our countries just too small
That the Governments got no money
Mum what do they want?

They just want what we want, that’s all
A safe place to live
Some work to pay the rent
A hospital when they’re sick
And school for their kids

Mum why are they coming here?
For lots of different reasons
Some to just make a better life
But awful things have happened
And some have got no home
Or worse still
Their friends and families
Have been killed
They’ve nowhere else to go

But Mum, why are they coming here?
We have the things we want
Its safe
Our country is a rich one
And has just so much space

The most important thing of all
Lots of people here don’t care
About the colour of others skin
The language that they speak
Or the religion that they choose

So Mum, will the million be coming here?
No, some people want the things we’ve got
To keep it for ourselves
Not share or care for others

But Mum you said?
I know, I can only tell you what I think
These people, they are just the same
As you and me
And Billy’s Dad
It’s really sad

Mum why’s it really sad?
Because, well I suppose
They should all be welcome here

Inspired by the NaPoWriMo challenge for April 2015 – Day 18 “And now for our (as always, optional) prompt, which takes us from 2015 back to the 1700s. After all, it’s the eighteenth of April, which means that today is the 240th anniversary of the midnight ride of Paul Revere! Today, in keeping with the theme of rush and warning, I challenge you to write a poem that involves an urgent journey and an important message. It could historical, mythical, entirely fictional, or memoir-ical.”
